Over at the mothership, my colleague Rob Griffiths solves a problem that I didn’t even know I had. I’ve tried, over the years, to become more diligent about inputting appointments and events into iCal, but sometimes it’s just too much of an interruption to fire up iCal, find the right day, and go through the necessary rigmarole (I know, seriously, how lazy am I?).
With Leopard, if the data is coming from Mail, then Apple’s data detectors make it a breeze. Just hover over the date/time and choose “Create new iCal event…” from the drop down menu. However, most other apps don’t take advantage of this functionality, so oftentimes I still have to open iCal. But, as Rob points out, a quick Automator script can simplify this task by letting you create a new event without having to open an application. Follow the link above to see the simple procedure.
Rob also goes through creating a similar workflow for To Dos (for which I currently use the lovely Anxiety). Now, as long as I can remember to use this functionality I’ve put together, the world should be a beautiful, perfectly organized place.
