Clever bookmark shortcuts from a smart Mann

One of my biggest problems as a Mac geek is that I rarely get to learn a new tip (yes, I call that a problem). Luckily, Merlin Mann and his gigantic bag of tricks are there to help.

In episode 77 of MacBreak (available in the show’s RSS feed), the productivity Mann himself shows us a very clever and wrist-saving trick for accessing bookmarks in Safari: items in the bookmark bar can be “clicked” by pressing the Command key and the number that represents its position in the bar. For instance, to activate the third bookmark, you simply press Command-3. It’s worth noting that Safari ignores bookmark folders for the order, so you need to skip those when determining a bookmark’s position.

This tip is especially useful for use with bookmarklets—little pieces of javascript disguised as bookmarks that can perform various action, like change the page’s appearance, email the page to someone, etc. You can find some useful bookmarklets at this site (choose the Netscape versions).

Update: thanks to our readers for pointing out this also works in Camino.

This also works in Shiira. (except it doesn't skip folders, but also doesn't do anything with them: when you press command-one and your first item in the bar is a folder, it just sits there and does nothing. Safari assigns command-one to the first actual bookmark, and so on)
