Here’s a good tip for those of you not tied to using AIM on iChat. While iChat allows for logging of conversations, it does not give a good way to access those conversations. One could use Logorrhea (free), but that depends on you always using the same computer and being at that computer when you want to extract that information. It also puts you at the mercy of iChat successfully writing out all those logs.
Wouldn’t it be much nicer to have all you conversations, regardless of where you were when you had them in one location? Wouldn’t it be even better if that was accessible any time you had access to a web browser? You can have your cake and it too. Use Google Talk instead of AIM (Google supplies setup instructions).
Google recently added auto logging for Google Talk accounts. Those transcripts are available and searchable inside Gmail’s web interface, available anywhere. It doesn’t matter if you use Google’s official client on Windows, a Jabber client (like iChat), or the web interface in Gmail itself. That phone number or address your friend told you last night will be at your disposal the next day. As Google adds these features, I start thinking harder and longer about whether I really want to use AIM anymore.
