For the Apple Store construction fetishists among us (who have tired of staring at the Boston Boylston Street Store webcam), you can now gaze, enraptured, upon the mysterious corner location that will soon contain Apple’s third—and reputedly largest—New York City store.
The location, at 401 W. 14th Street in the colorfully-named “Meatpacking District” (which, Wikipedia informs me, was once called “Gansevoort Market”), is expected to occupy the entire second floor of the building, and the 9th Avenue side of the ground floor.
We’re not sure exactly when the new “Meatpacking Store” (mmmm, iBacon) is due to open, but we’d guess within the next year or so. Will it top the 5th Avenue cube in the attentions of the populace, or in Steve Jobs’s heart? Too soon to tell, my friends.

I want to know when we'll get a real Seattle store. All the stores here are in outlying malls. It seems like Seattle should have a proper downtown store like Boston.
With many of the CompUSA stores in the Seattle area going out of business the number of Mac outlets is going to dwindle. I hope the rumored Best Buy partnership takes up some of the slack.
It's interesting to compare the Fifth Avenue and 14th Street locations. The Fifth Avenue location is very close to several subway lines, as well as huge tourist draws in Central Park and the high-class shopping on Fifth Avenue. (Granted, the Fifth Avenue store is itself becoming a tourist attraction in its own right.) The 14th Street location is a long block away from just two subway lines, and is out on Manhattan's extreme West Side. Although pretty close to Chelsea Piers and Greenwich Village, it's not what I'd call a prime location. We'll just have to see.
