Wait, since when is Staten Island the latest hip, hang-out spot for teens? Well, since an Apple Store opened there. Yes, the Apple Store in Staten Island has apparently been attracting hip, young teenagers there to hang out. Why? Well, according to 20-year old Michael Tedesco, “It’s like a social attraction.” Musicians, city hipsters, and even people from all over the tri-state area have been flocking to the Staten Island Apple Store, whether to learn, play around, hang, or just be part of the scene.
Now, as a teenager and New Yorker (and proud of it!), I find it a little strange to be hanging out at the Staten Island Apple Store. I mean sure, the Apple Store is awesome, and is a great place for musicians and “creative professionals” to hang out, but why Staten Island? I mean, no offense to Staten Islanders, but I wouldn’t exactly call it a place to go with my friends and chill. Why not the 5th Avenue Apple Store? It’s in the center of New York for crying out loud! But even if you forget Staten Island, the big problem with hanging out at the Apple Store is lack of food. I have to say, food is a huge attraction for teenage boys. That’s why, as a commentator on digg noted, serving coffee at the Apple Store would mean huge business. And better yet, why not open up a little mini-Starbucks in an Apple Store? I can just smell the money. But, all of that aside, I still think it’s great that Staten Island is boosting their rep by becoming a hang out spot for teens.

I don't think selling coffee inside an Apple Store would be such a good idea... brown spills everywhere would really detract from the clean, white appearance.
As a native New Yorker and Queens native, I think it's safe to say that I never would have regularly visited the Staten Island Apple Store (past tense, since I'm currently studying at MIT). For one thing, it's too damn far away from Queens - at least 2 hours. Second, it's Staten Island. Period.
I'm sure a lot of those "people from the tri-state area" happen to come from Jersey. It might be easier to get from Jersey to Staten Island than to Fifth Avenue.
But you know when it's all said and done, it's NYC! There's more than enough people for all three Apple Stores. (Remember SoHo?)
Typical manhattan-centricity. There is world that exists outside of Manhattan!!!
