Ben Franklin said nothing was certain in life except death and taxes, but maybe he wasn’t aware of tax-free weekend. Twelve different states have some sort of tax-exempt weekend, and if yours is among them, you can save big by shopping at a local Apple Store or the Apple store online. Apple has sent out an email to some customers from states with tax-free incentives, reminding them that if they buy a qualifying product this weekend (Aug. 4th-6th) they may be eligible for tax exemption.
A buddy of mine used this a couple of years ago to buy his new PowerMac G5, which I think saved him a fair bit of green. Certainly, it’s hard to argue against saving money. The states with tax free weekends appear to be West Virginia, Virginia, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Texas, South Carolina, Vermont, Missouri, North Carolina, Iowa, Georgia, and Florida (sorry, Tennessee).
Sadly, some items are not eligible, including video games, digital cameras, digital video cameras, joysticks, game pads, speakers and—say it ain’t so—the iPod. So sad. But if you’re in the market for a new Mac and you live in one of those states, be sure and check out. Oh, and the lines at your local Apple Store are likely to be quite length, so shop early.
MacUser is your source for news, info, and opinion about Apple, the Mac, and the iPod. Our dedicated team of bloggers covers everything that is relevant to Mac users — and, okay, some stuff that’s not quite relevant, but is still a lot of fun.
Actually, Tennessee does participate in the tax-free weekend and computers with a value less than $1,500 are eligible.
Alabama has tax-free shopping tis weekend also, but I think the limit on computers is pretty low - $600, maybe?
