Can’t get enough of those Apple Stores? Neither can Apple. CFO Peter Oppenheimer (of the California Oppenheimers) said yesterday that Apple was planning to expand their retail operations “at a measured and controlled pace.” You want numbers? You little devil you: we ought to see 35 to 40 stores opening in the next year, 10 of which should be outside of the US, including some in countries that as of yet have no stores. There are 173 stores at present, and if Oppenheimer’s estimate is on, then we should see the 200th Apple Store opening some time this year.
Apple’s also renovating existing stores, bringing features of the newer stores to some of the older ones. The stores have been doing exceptionally well, topping their sales figures from previous years. No doubt the exclusivity of the iPhone, which will be available only in Apple Stores and Cingular Stores, will help as well. Steve Jobs recently said: “Our stores were conceived and built for this moment in time — to roll out iPhone.”
Given how crowded the stores always are whenever I go in one, this is hardly a surprise. For the kind of computers that Apple makes, creating a retail space where people can try out Macs and iPods is probably one of the best business moves ever made.

Definately made a difference for Apple when they opened there own retail stores and gave the customers the ability to test the computers without stupid password locks like Fry's. And all of the equipment is always in working order unlike Fry's and other retailers. The stores are always clean and neat and the displays are always setup nicely. They created a very customer friendly enviroment even for the kids too.
