The general feeling among critics has been that the MacBook Air wouldn’t be quite as hot a seller as some of the other Macs in Apple’s lineup—particularly the MacBook and the iMac. However, if the availability of the svelte notebook is any indication, the thing is flying off the shelves like, er, birds.
Ars Technica reports that most stores including Apple’s own retail and online versions, Best Buy, and Amazon are either out of stock or list a shipping date at least a week or two into the future. Seemingly, the demand is so high that even stores where the stock is replenished on a daily basis are finding it hard to keep everyone happy. Apple Stores are (politely) denying reservations and have adopted a “first-come, first-served” policy.
The question of whether this is due to short supply or high demand is up in the air (no pun intended) and since Apple does not list individual sales figures of the different models in their Mac lineup, we may never know for sure. My uneducated guess, however, is that the notebook is selling much better than most analysts had expected.
If any of you intend to buy yourself a MacBook Air, it might be a good idea to check its availability status online before you head out to the Apple Store. Also, try to make it there in the morning itself (and by morning, we do not mean the crack of dawn) because they tend to disappear pretty fast. We’d hate to see you return empty-handed—but let us know about it if you do.

I think they took it easy on their initial production estimates. If they though it would flop, maybe they didn’t make as many as they normally would until they could test the waters.
