Forthcoming Apple Stores in Boston, Sydney previewed

Back Bay StoreIt would be hard to dispute that Apple Retail has done a fantastic job of creating spaces that not only show off their products to great effect, but also welcome and invite. The Apple Store in the mall near my folks’ house (the Chestnut Hill Store) does bang up business, especially when compared to the rest of the mall.

Information on two new Apple Stores have come to light this week: the Back Bay flagship store in Boston (MacUser’s epicenter), which we’ve discussed before, and a proposed store in Sydney, Australia. As with their prior ventures, Apple has had to adapt both stores to fit in with their surrounding environments whilst simultaneously retaining the elements of the store that make them fit in with Apple’s image, not an easy task.

The Boston Globe is carrying an extensive article on the process of developing the Back Bay Store, while the Sydney Morning Herald has the scoop on Apple Stores down under (which may include a second store in Melbourne). All stores are expected to be multi-story flagship locations for their surrounding environments, including distinctive features like glass staircases, and, in the case of the Back Bay Store, an “eco-friendly roof…blanketed with hardy vegetation designed to insulate the building in winter and keep it cool in summer.” Take that, Greenpeace.
