Perhaps I should have left this tidbit to my Deutsche-compatible counterpart Derik, but Apple has apparently struck a deal with European electronics retailer Saturn to open a retail space inside Saturn’s store in Hamburg, Germany (the pictures are from the store’s opening last week).
This “store-inside-a-store” concept is nothing new to Apple—they’ve been working out a similar arrangement with Best Buy here in the US—but they’ve taken a very “Apple Store” approach to the section. Besides the rows of simple wooden tables featuring Macs, iPods, and accessories, there’s also one of the Apple Store’s trademark Genius Bars.
I wonder if we’ll see some of the Best Buy “mini stores” head in this direction; it’d certainly be a nice touch for those who don’t have a full blown Apple Store nearby. The Genius Bar especially is a nice touch. Germany does not yet have an Apple Store, though word is that one will open in Frankfurt next year.
In related news, Apple has also apparently taken a lease on space in the ginormous West Edmonton Mall in Edmonton, Alberta. That would be Apple’s fifth store in Canada, and the first in the western part of the country (there are at the moment three stores in Toronto and one in Laval, Quebec). Another store is rumored for Calgary, about 185 miles south of Edmonton.
