Apple Store to offer on-site Mac Pro configurations?

Customize Your MacReader Gabe dropped us a line to say that he had contacted his local Apple Store in Peabody, MA about RAM for the new Mac Pros. They told him that while he shouldn’t hold his breath for the next month or so, they would be offering build-to-order options at the local store, for everything from RAM to video cards. The rep told him that the options would be available as a configuration, or independently. At the moment, this is the only report we’ve had of this, so we’ll have to see if we can get some confirmation.

In some ways this isn’t terribly surprising: with only one standard configuration, Apple is seriously marketing the Mac Pro as the first built-to-order machine. And though the web may be better suited to this kind of customization, the Apple’s brick and mortar stores do such great business they’d be fools not to make the configurations available there.

Then again, with over 4 million possible configurations, that’s a lot of parts to keep on hand.

Someone needs to tell that fellow to inquire elsewhere for RAM... Apple's prices for RAM are way over what you should pay.

Not quite, it's actually only:
3 different CPUs
+3 different RAM modules
+3 different HDs
+3 different graphics cards
+3 different displays
+1 optical drive
+2 wireless adapters
+1 fibre channel card
+1 modem
+2 keyboard types
+2 different mighty mouses
+4 different types of OS X
+4 different optional Apple apps
-------
32 different parts

You get the "over 4 million possible configurations" because the different options for each component are multiplied rather than added.
