Oh Steve, how you so perfectly fit into our idealized stereotyping of your life. It all seems so over the top: the merciless firings, the strong-arming corporate leader, the, uh, nutso hippie attitude… Funny thing is: most of it is actually true.
To the right is part of a photo (from “Diana Walker: The Bigger Picture”) taken of Steve Jobs in 1982, when he was unable to find enough friends to help him move his furniture into his new place (they were all “busy” that night). Jobs, though, described the situation differently:
This was a very typical time. I was single. All you needed was a cup of tea, a light, and your stereo, you know, and that's what I had.
Yes. Very…typical.

I heard Paul Rand speak at the MIT Media Lab some years back. He talked about presenting the NeXT logo to Steve Jobs at his house. He said that the house didn't seem to have any furniture and Jobs and the others sat on the floor on a plush white carpet. He had to get them to bring a dining room chair in because he would have been too uncomfortable on the floor.
But who took the picture? And if the answer is Himself, then it's kind of fun to think about the amount of selfawareness (to be kind) that went into it!
