What’s left for WWDC?

WWDC BadgeIt seems to me that Apple has all its cards on the table. The 8-core Mac Pro was released last week. Leopard has officially been delayed for release until October. Final Cut Studio 2 was released yesterday. What else could possibly be left for Apple’s second-biggest yearly event, WWDC?

We know of two things that will (almost) for sure appear at WWDC: the iPhone will be announced as shipping in its final version, and a Leopard update will be given—along with copies of the OS for developers. Those two things aren’t exactly inconsequential, but I wouldn’t call them show-stoppers either. Therefore it’s my theory that Apple still has something up its sleeve for WWDC, I just don’t exactly know what.

I’d put my money on redesigned iMacs, as I think a video iPod is out of the question until the iPhone has been shipping for at least a few months and the holiday season is a little closer. But really I have no idea, I’m just excited because now I expect a surprise. What ideas and opinions have you, O loyal and faithful MacUser readers?

you forgot about iwork and ilife, surely they'll get an update

What about all of the "top secret" features that couldn't be announced for fear MS would copy them into Vista?

We really, really could use a "headless" mid-range Mac as well.

Well if Santa Rosa chips are available in May, maybe we'll see new MacBooks/MB Pros at WWDC in June...

Well, ideally Apple will not use WWDC as a marketing event (like they did a few years ago, much to the annoyance of the crowd that paid).

I'd say it's even money that you will see the "Top Secret" features of Leopard. I wouldn't be surprised to see new MacBook/MacBook Pros either, as Ambrose says. Call that 3:1.

Other'n that, though, you're right. I don't see much in the pipeline that is applicable at the developer conference.

So, the long shot is that Apple will announce third-part developer support for iPhone via Dashcode (20:1) or Xcode (50:1) and Apple will give iPhones to each developer who attends (1,000,000:1).

What about new cinema displays?

Well, as the keynote has been blocked off for 3 HOURS I guess they have something to talk about. Leopard's Top Secret features should take an hour. iLife could take half an hour. If iWork takes half an hour we should see a spreadsheet and a true word processor. That leaves an hour. Resolution independence is a big deal, so new high resolution displays are in order. Santa Rosa will be coming out late May/Early June. Perhaps Ives has had time to work on a new iMac design. I'd kill for a prosumer tower...you know, a desktop computer that uses desktop processors (which cost less than mobile processors). And people are dying for small MBP. I think they might just lay it all out there for the rest of 2007. I hope. Please? Also, to make the Apple store a one stop shop, how about some affordable monitors to go with the (rev'ed)mini and the new prosumer tower. And heck, since I'm waiting for Logic Pro 8, let's throw that in too.

What about the tiny Macbook?

As someone already pointed out, the WWDC is an event dedicated to developers. Let's hope the keynote will not be another 2-hours paean to the iphone! Unless, of course, Steve will open up iphone sw development and announce some nice new IDE or Xcode addendum for this purpose.

How about update to appleTV

To early for Apple TV upgrades. iLife 07 is still a possibility and maybe a revamp of .Mac along with it.
The new secret features may come out finally which Steve might actually show off and ask the developers to concentrate on finding any bugs. iPod upgrades could be a real possibility even if the iPhone comes out. All guesses and we will all have to wait until we hear of the results of the keynote to really find out what is going to be reality.
