MW07: A word on the lack of Mac updates in the Keynote

Jobskeynote07I was listening to good ol’ Stevie’s presentation once again last night because actually being there just wasn’t enough. I find the sound of his voice soothing and it helps me fall asleep at night. (OK, just kidding, but I really did discover a little detail which I missed the first time I heard the address.) The detail I discovered is revealed in Steve’s quote below:

So, 2007 is going to be a great year for the Mac. But, this is all we’re going to talk about the Mac today. We’ll move on to some other things and over the course of the next several months we’re going to roll out some awesome stuff for the Mac. But for today we’re going to move on.

Yes, that’s right. I think we all can infer from that quote that Steve knows the lack of Mac updates (iLife, iWork, Leopard, processor speed boosts) were a little odd. He practically blatantly acknowledges it. So if you were disappointed by yesterday’s Keynote don’t despair—just give Apple a few more months and hopefully your wildest wishes will come true.

Listening pays off. Thanks for looking into this Scott. We all love the iPhone and believe it will succeed as the iPod has.

However, our main passion (at least mine) is the computer. Its lovely OS, the wonderful applications. And to know that Steve has confirmed that there will be "awesome stuff" helps me sleep at night.

I am so ready to jump on Leopard and iLife.

My prediction: A keynote for leopard + iLife + iWork for Valentines day. Its Steve's love gift to all of us.

I agree! Thanks, Scott!!! I believe these are great beginnings, the iPhone and apple tv but we were all hyped. A few more months.....ok....I know it'll be worth the wait!

I feel kinda like a chump. I put off buying a mac mini because I was expecting at least a speed bump, but, I told myself, even if that doesn't happen, I'll still get iLife 07.

Or not. Sheesh.

The new stuff is cool and all, but I wanted something to buy.

The reason iLife wasn' released is because

1. Many of its key improvements features are tied into Leopard

2. iChat will be a Skype replacement called that will have much of the UI of iPhone

Also, the OS in the phone had core animation. I believe we did get a peak at Leopard. Touch screen iMacs anyone? You know, the kind you can pinch.

And the iphone isn't done. They have until June. This was just an announcement like the iTV was.

I think there were two forces pushing Mac-centric announcements farther out in the year.

First, the iPhone. As with the announcement where Steve intro'd the first white iBook along with WiFi, it deserved a presentation essentially all its own.

The second, and I'm guessing stronger force, is that Leopard isn't ready to ship. While I'm sure ALL new versions of Mac apps will work reasonably well on Tiger, I'm equally sure that every single updated Mac app will sport features that are Leopard-only.

I think your guess for February-ish is pretty good. At the very worst, it won't be any later than May, since that's when they'll have to ramp up the promo machine for the iPhone release.
