What do you do if you’re dying for a new Apple product, but it’s not out yet? Scour the web for rumors on it. WIth that in mind, rumor sites love to post the latest bits of information they find on an unreleased Apple product. Lately, that product has been the elusive iPhone. iPhone rumors have gone as far back as, well, forever, but lately they’ve been making a comeback with more information on supposed supplies of this new device.
Now, a new rumor has hit the streets. Kevin Rose, millionaire founder of digg.com and Revision3, has given “insider information” on the iPhone on the latest, yet still unreleased, episode of Diggnation. According to Rose, the new iPhone will sport the following features:
To his credit, Rose did predict Core 2 Duo MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and the iPod nano, but I’m still hesitant to trust yet another source of iPhone rumors. Still, even with the fact that Rose’s comment is only a rumor, practically every tech blog on the web is covering it. Not just the Apple rumors sites, mind you, but Engadget, Gizmodo, Ars Technica, TUAW, and surprise, surprise, digg, are all covering this story. Now, I’m not trying to discredit Kevin Rose, but I’m just saying it’s only a rumor. Besides, January’s only a month away anyway.
Yes, it's true what Kevin revealed is still speculative and very much a rumor...but it's fresh info that fuels the rumor mill :). The guy is a bizillionaire and every geeks idol - so what more does he have to gain from making this crap up? I think it's real - and if it's not - do we really care in 5 weeks when we all will find out the truth? I personally think that there will be much more info about the iPhone / MobileMe platform in the coming weeks as Macworld approaches.

He's a theoretical millionaire. Right now, he isn't. I wouldn't call him every geek's idol ( though I'm jealous of interaction with Posh from SG).
As for why he's saying it, he may very well believe it and his source is full of it. Or maybe just wants to get in on the fun. No one knows.
Let's face it, you just want to believe him as it serves your site.
C'mon guys, he invented Digg! Now, color me naive, but I know that I've never seen a rumor on digg.com
The only person with an "inside scoop" on Apple is the Infinite Loop ice cream man (whom I believe to be of great integrity).
Does that pricing make sense to anyone?
4GB nano $199 - supposed iPhone $249
8GB nano $249 - supposed iPhone $449
That's $50 between the 4GB and 8GB nanos, $200 between the phones. I'm not sure how you convince someone to pay $200 more for a phone that still won't hold you entire music collection.
Dave,
No, the pricing doesn't make sense to me, but, then, I'm used to paying $400+ for Sony Ericsson phones.
If Apple is going to undercut SE by $200 to $400 I'll be surprised. Not to mention the fact that the nano model will be in direct competition at these prices.
Instead, I believe that Apple will ship an iPhone priced at $399-$499. After all, we're talking about a phone that should offer email, web, IM of some sort, possibly a camera and attendant features, plus an MP3 player. SE's got this dialed at a great price (love my W810i and it integrates well into OS X).
Kevin Rose is not a millionaire... He mentioned on TWiT that Digg is *worth* that much, but that Digg was hardly breaking even at this point.
(The first time I tried to post this, my MacBook's hard drive died in the middle of it!)
