Those sneaky patent-watchers over at MacNN just pulled up something mighty interesting this fine Thursday morning. Based on a quick non-expert read of the patent in question by yours truly and MacNN’s more in-depth analysis, it seems to suggest that Apple could be working on a new addition to iTunes that would essentially link HD Radio and HDTV broadcasts by embedding Apple/iTunes metadata into them, and then allowing them to be purchased via iTunes.
MacNN also points out: Also noteworthy is Apple’s newly conceived concept referred to as “bleeding” - which allows users to send live broadcast tags to friends during a conversation on an iPhone. This secondary filing would strongly suggest that Apple is very close to releasing this new iTunes service relating to wireless broadcast TV services. This would be a significant new iPhone service for Christmas Holiday sales.
But this probably wouldn’t be just sending broadcast tags to an iPhone, but also that audio (perhaps video?) content as well.
From the text of the patent:If the user indicates a desire to bleed the media broadcast into the call, then at step 610, the PMD [personal media device] begins bleeding the media broadcast into the call, making the broadcast audible to all parties connected to the call. The user can continue with the telephone conversation and interact with the media broadcast, e.g., by tagging media tracks, purchasing media tracks, and/or recording the media broadcast as described below. In particular, if the user or another party to the call is interested in a particular media track being played, the user or the other party can tag the media track.
That sounds mighty handy.
Our local radio stations are already running commercials about HD Radio's ability to tag for later download in iTunes. I think this is already live...
