VLC media player, the popular open-source, cross-platform media player has been updated to version 0.8.5 with loads of new features. Most notably, the OS X version of VLC Player is now a Universal Binary. Also, 0.8.5 has support for Growl, an OS X notification system. Some other updates to VLC player also include a statistics system, support for Winamp 2 skins, new video filters, and the ability to download new updates. Of course, VLC player still doesn’t have full support for the popular H.264 format, so it isn’t totally Mac friendly. But hey, VLC media player is a nice, free alternative to the somewhat limited Quicktime and Quicktime Pro.

I've found that VLC's support for H.264 is even better than QuickTime's. I've downloaded some widescreen H.264 files that were created on Windows using other apps (nero, I think). When played in QT they should up as 4:3 and all stuttery on my powerbook, but in VLC they play 16:9 and smooth.
