Typinator is back, with version 3.0

TypinatorTypinator might sound like a diabolical combination between an outmoded writing machine and a cyborg assassin from the future, but nothing could be further from the case. Like TypeIt4Me and TextExpander, Typinator lets you created text-based shortcuts: type a quick shortcut like “thnku” and it might insert an entire generic “Thank you” text. Or type something like “ep1” and it might give you something like “While you may hold the opinion that the Star Wars prequels were decent enough films in their own right, the truth is that they were in fact utter crap. Yes, we include Episode III. Saying that it is the best of the prequels is like saying that getting hit in the eye with a stick is better than getting hit in the eye with a piece of rebar.”

Just as an example of some text that I find myself typing frequently.

The latest version of Typinator, 3.1 3.0, adds a—in my opinion—desperately needed feature, which is to say that the program now runs in the background, with no Dock icon. This is one of the few things that was keeping from giving this program a real chance: I really don’t like extraneous apps running in my Dock; it’s a bizarre neurosis, I know.

Typinator also has some other nifty features, among them the ability to auto-correct spelling mistakes in any application you’re working in; the app also lets you import existing shortcuts from TypeIt4Me and TextExpander, if you want to give it a whirl. The full version costs about US$31; until you register, you can use it as much as you want in TextEdit, but it will give you a registration message in other apps.

That should be 3.0 not 3.1. Still a fine program though.
