The search for a free Spanning Sync: Part II

Tbirdgcal In the first part of this series, I looked at GCalDaemon, a command-line based program for syncing Google Calendar and iCal. It didn’t exactly work well for me, so I looked at a different alternative, which involves ditching iCal alltogether.

This method uses Sunbird, Mozilla’s open-cource calendar app, and a neat extension called Provider. The set up is simple — install Sunbird, download and install the Provider extension, set up a new Gogle Calendar calendar from the “New Calendar” options, and put in its private XML feed and your username and password. After that, you get perfect bidirectional syncing between your two calendars.

Of course, this solution is not without flaws. First off, you need the bleeding edge alpha version of Sunbird 0.6 (or the Thunderbird 2.0 RC2 with the Lightning calendar extension). Also, using Sunbird really defeats the entire purpose of iCal and Google Calendar synchrnozation, becaue Sunbird lacks that essential integration with OS X and sleek form and function. Still, if you want an easy, free system to sync Google Calendar with a desktop calendar across multiple computers and operating systems, Sunbird and Provider do the trick.

So while this system didn’t work for me, there’s still one more option. Stay tuned for Part III: Back to Beta.
