As Derik mentioned not so long ago, SmileOnMyMac acquired Textpander, the free utility that expands abbreviations for words as you type, renaming it to TextExpander and adding a price tag. Well, SmileOnMyMac has now officially released TextExpander as version 1.3. The new version of TextExpander/Textpander includes some features such as direct creation of snippets from selections and snippet nesting. Of course, one of the largest changes to TextExpander/Textpander is its price, which now is $29.95. Oh freeware, why must you leave us?

Just to clarify, Textpander was never freeware. It was donationware, meaning you were expected to pay for it -- as much as you could afford, or as much as it was worth to you -- if you used it.
Sadly, too many people equate donationware with freeware. (Read: They never pay for it.) That's one of the reasons Peter sold Textpander to SmileOnMyMac.
