SlingPlayer 2.0 beta released, just for Windows

Sling It bothers me when software that was previously cross platform goes platform specific for a new release, even if temporarily. Sling has done just that with the latest version of their player software. I’m trying to cut them some slack because developing for multiple platforms is hard, I love their products, and I like the new features.

If you don’t know what the Slingbox is, it’s a box you attach to your TV or other video sources and your internet connection. Instantly, you can watch TV elsewhere in your house (through your network) or from somewhere on the road. It’s perfect for watching your favorite team’s games even though you’re always on the road.

The latest version of their client software (Windows only, boo) gives a couple compelling new features. First, it locally buffers the video so you can rewind real quick and catch something you missed. Second, it has integrated a guide. This is going to make a huge difference. One of the most frustrating things to do currently is finding something to watch, even if you attach the Slingbox to a DVR. Thirdly, your configuration information can get saved to their servers, making for easy configuration on all your devices. Sadly, the DVR-like features they previously promised seem to have gotten the ax.

I just hope that this beta comes to Mac soon. I’m not resorting to Fusion to use my Slingbox.

I was recently introducedd to slingboxes in general. The minute they release an iPhone app to watch the shows, I'll order an HD box that same day.
