This post will serve a dual purpose. Firstly, to notify the reader that screenshot and lightweight photo editing app Skitch has been bumped up to beta version 6.2. Secondly, this post is to inform you of Skitch’s awesomeness.
You see, ever since I heard of this free little screen capping and editing program by plasq (the guys responsible for Comic Life), I’ve been enticed. As a part time blogger, it’s often necessary to grab little images that catch your fancy on the web, and most screen shot programs, including Apple’s included Grab app, just don’t make the cut. For one, Grab only lets you save in .tiff format and has no resizing features whatsoever. Photoshop is great for conversions and resizing, but it’s heavy on the wallet and is kind of hard core for use only as an image resizer and converter.
Skitch lets you capture any part of a screen, window, desktop, etc., as well as resize them to your heart’s desire. It also converts images into .jpg, .png, and .tif formats among others. Although it’s still in beta, I’ve had nary a problem with it during the four or so months I’ve been using it. Best of all, it’s free, so give it a shot and let me know if you like it as much as I do.
MacUser is your source for news, info, and opinion about Apple, the Mac, and the iPod. Our dedicated team of bloggers covers everything that is relevant to Mac users — and, okay, some stuff that’s not quite relevant, but is still a lot of fun.
Very cool application, hopefully when its out of beta the price will be reasonable, though with the ads on the upload site maybe it will remain free.
Grab can capture in all formats. Check your facts. I have set mine to capture jpeg to the desktop by default.
@Advait: To your credit, it seems to be possible to capture in other formats with Grab, but it requires terminal access, and seems to only be possible on a Leopard OS, at least from what I've gathered on certain message boards. Either way, it's kind of silly not include a *simple* method of saving in other formats.
Of course you could just use Preview to resize your Grab created TIFF image and convert to a different file format....simple... and free!
The best part of skitch is its easy way of adding notifications, lines, arrows and all that and a single push upload to web button. And skitch is hosted on MediaTemple hosting, which is no imageshack if in case anyone didn't know.
