I’m not the world’s biggest iCal user (I like to think I’m reasonably sized), but I do find it handy for providing me with alarms about events and projects that I might otherwise forget. One problem with iCal, however, is though I want to often set the same types of alarm for events (say, an hour reminder before something is due), it’s a pain to have to go in and change the settings every single time.
Robert Blum was fed up with that too, so he created iCalFix, an add-on for the calendaring program that lets you define a default alarm time and sound for your iCal events. There’s also a separate setting for the default alarm time for all-day events. Once you set those up, you’ll find that new events you create will automatically have the default alarm associated with them.
Of course, that may be a little annoying for people who only want to create some events with alarms, since now you have to go in and turn off the alarms if you don’t want them. But for those who like a cacophony of beeps and boops, this is the way to go.
Updated: Fixed developer’s name. Sorry, Robert!

This isn't true. When you set the alarm type in iCal the bottom of the list is alarm styles you've set in the past. You don't have to enter that info more than one.
Robert Blum, please ;)
As for Mark2000: That's true, but iCalFix auto-generates an alarm. No typing at all. It's especially handy for ex-Outlook users, who are accustomed to that feature.
