So, on occasion I have this little problem with my memory—what? I just told you that? Crap. As you can see, I could definitely use some help in the Department of Remembering Things (that’s third floor, next to housewares). Our buddy Dan Frakes over at Macworld has a shiny little gem for people just like me.
John Maisey’s Dates to iCal makes it easy to grab dates—such as birthdays—from Address Book and import them into iCal. “But Dan,” you say, “Address Book already lets you import birthdays?” Oh, indeed, generic reader, but the dates imported from Address Book have some shortcomings: for example, you can’t set alarms on them. So if you, like me, leave iCal closed most of the time, those crucial days may sail by without you ever noticing. Quelle horreur!
Not only does Dates to iCal lets you assign alarms, you can edit the events and the calendar (Address Book’s Birthday calendar is locked), adding birthdays for people who aren’t in your Address Book, or adding other dates like anniversaries. Yep, it’s like one of those features that Apple forgot to put in. Maybe we’ll see it in the future, but for now, Dates to iCal fills the void nicely.
