Play Fetch with a Leopard

fetch53.jpgI’m pretty sure the Mac platform has more FTP applications than any one person reasonably needs. Derik is a fan of Panic’s Transmit, while I’ve long been using the free Cyberduck. But back before my OS X days, I was a devoted user of Jim Matthews’s Fetch, one of the oldest (er, most experienced?) FTP clients for the Mac.

The newly released Fetch 5.3 brings Leopard compatibility to the venerable application, adding support for code signing and Leopard’s firewall, copy and paste uploading, and more. The appearance of the app has also been updated to look a little more Leopardy (don’t worry; no spots or space themes here). 5.3 is a free upgrade to users of Fetch 5; a new single license will cost $25, and upgrades from version 4 go for $15. Educational and charitable users can snag a free license.

I don’t know that it’s enough to get me back on the Fetch bandwagon, but it’s good that this space has so much active competition. Though, if I may admit an embarrassing truth, I actually still do much of my FTPing through Terminal. I know, I know. Someday I will join the 20th century—getting to the 21st might take a little longer.

That's a backhanded boast if I ever saw one.
