Been waiting for a new version of Photoshop that doesn’t require you to spend several hundred dollars of your hard-earned money. Wait no further: Adobe is now shipping a Mac version of Photoshop Elements 6, its entry-level version of Photoshop.
Despite the fact that Photoshop remains the de facto choice for photo editing on the Mac, it’s been facing a lot of competition from the indie market of late, with apps like Acorn and Pixelmator. But I do find myself wondering: would I rather spend $60 on Pixelmator or pay the extra $20 for the established brand? I like Pixelmator and Acorn, but I do still find myself on occasion trying to do things that seemed to be way easier in Photoshop (perhaps merely because it’s what I’m used to).
Elements 6 brings a number of improvements, including Photomerge functionality that lets you composite several shots of the same scene into one, and a new Guided edit mode. And, glory of glories, you can now create stamps with your art out there. I’m sure that won’t be abused in the slightest.
You’ll need 10.4.8 or higher (Leopard included) to run Elements 6; if you own a previous version, you can take advantage of an included $20 rebate.

I'm getting pretty sick of Adobe applications. InDesign seems more unstable than ever. They cancalled ImageReady. PhotoShop costs a fortune.
I'm using Acorn now and it works fine for editing images for my Web site. I find all the bells and whistles of PhotoShop are actually a detriment to a fast workflow.
I'll try PhotoShop Elements 6. I own Pixelmator (via a promo) and, sincerely, don't like it at all. I much rather prefer DrawIt (to do icons) or Acorn (for general things).
However, I'm curious to see how PSE6 behaves.
I'm looking forward to PSE6-I have PSE4 running on my first Gen. Macbook (with 2 GB RAM) and it ran very slow. Now that it is Universal Binary hopefully it will run a little quicker.
The upgrade pricing also helped...
It's not shipping yet and no promo demos are available on the site yet. Why write this article now if the software isn't ready for testing or purchasing, and the same page from Adobe touting a 'pre-order' has been up for many weeks now?
It is now available for purchase but there is no trial version for download available yet. Won't be buying until I can see what I am buying. I did use Elements 6 when I was still on a Windows machine, but I need a second look as I didn't use it that much (since the Windows machine was slow and irritating...) Converted to Mac in January, kicking myself for not having done so years ago...
