OS X closing in on 8% market share in June

netapps_osx_0608.jpgIf Yankee Group’s recent survey or creation of the EDA weren’t any indication, Macs are beginning to infiltrate the Windows World. And now there’s even more proof, this time in the form of data from metrics firm Net Applications.

According to Net Applications’ data, Mac OS X’s market share has been slowly, but surely, rising over the past twelve months. In June, this market share reached a new peak at 7.96%, up from 6.03% a year ago. Additionally, Intel Mac market share has also risen dramatically, up a little over 2.5% from July 2007.

With Mac market share rising in business and consumer markets, who knows how long it’ll be before there’s an OS X Mac for every Wintel machine out there.

Personally, I kind of hope that Apple's market share stays (relatively) low. It's nice being different from other people and bucking the status quo.

I'd like to see a healthy 25% to 30%, big enough for software companies, peripheral makers, and various Internet services to take notice (put the "beleagured" to rest for good), but small enough that Apple doesn't try to appeal to the lowest common denominator like that "other" company does.
