MailTags 2.0 public beta here

Posted by Derik DeLong | Monday, August 21, 2006 5:54 AM PT

MailTags Tim over at Hawk Wings has tipped me off to the recent release of the MailTags 2.0 public beta. There are two big changes. First, IMAP is supported. That is absolutely essential for me. The second change is one that some people may not be so hot on. It’s no longer donationware and will cost $30 ($25 while in beta phase).

I decided that since I was waiting for IMAP support, I should try it out. This is a beta and it shows unfortunately. I couldn’t for the life of me get tags generated on my Powerbook show up on my Mac Pro. I even checked the raw source of the message and the MailTags data was there. It just wasn’t being displayed. Maybe I’m doing something wrong. Until it’s a little more intuitive, my money is staying right where it is.

Hi Derik,
I am a long-time user of the current version of MailTags.
I'm glad that you point out that it's beta software, but I really don't think that it's fair to highlight problems while it's still in beta. It would be more constructive at this stage for you to address your concerns to the developer. It is a public beta, but it is a BETA nonetheless and the usual caveats apply.
I happen to know the developer and he is very responsive to feedback. He really wants his software to address the needs of the Mac community.
I also happen to know that he agonized long and hard before deciding to impose a shareware fee. As donation-ware MailTags wasn't bringing in enough to recoup his costs.
