MacSpeech to bring Dragon NaturallySpeaking’s capabilities to Mac OS X

MacSpeech DictateNuance Communications, makers of the reputable Dragon NaturallySpeaking, has signed a licensing agreement with MacSpeech which allows the latter to integrate the Windows application’s advanced speech recognition capabilities into their new product, Dictate. MacSpeech has decided to halt development of their other speech recognition product, iListen, and customers of the company who had bought iListen in the past are being offered substantial discounts on the retail price ($199) of MacSpeech Dictate. If you’re a registered user of iListen, you can have Dictate for $99 and if you bought it in 2008, you’ll be able to buy it for just $29 when it goes on sale on 15 February 2008.

Dragon NaturallySpeaking is regarded as one of the best applications in the field and MacSpeech assures us that Dictate is just as good as its Windows counterpart. “Now for the first time, Mac users can begin dictating straight into their applications with very little time spent training the software to recognise their voice.” If that turns out to be true, we’ll have a winner on our hands. MacSpeech Dictate also enjoys the honor of being awarded the ‘Macworld 2008 Best of Show’ award, so I guess we can expect to have a decent application on our hands come February.

I've been waiting for this one. My Dad really wanted a good dictating software. Hope this works as advertised...

Will this mean we finally get a speech recognition package for the Mac which will cover the full range of languages offered by Dragon? French was promised by MacSpeech for years, for example, but never happened under iListen.

So much for competition. The iListen product just won an award and had some advantage versus it's Windows counterpart, and now it is dead. I'd rather see BOTH products for Mac. this is sad news.
