MacAppADay: Is the temperature rising?

MailSteward IconDay 2 of MacAppADay has brought us, the downloading public, a free copy of MailStewardLite, an email backup utility that costs $24.95. This time, there’s actually a method to purchase the app, so I know we’re not being had.

After installing it, my first impressions are good. For my money (which in this case was none), MailStewardLite is a fully capable, if not excellent email archiver. It stores your messages and even attachments in a responsive, easy to read interface. I feel like it skipped the beauty parlor to go to the track, and that’s alright.

It’s pretty clear why MailStewardLite is on MacAppADay. The developers clearly want you to get hooked, at which point you’ll think about upgrading to MailSteward, which is a $49.95 app. MailStewardLite even pulls a “Quicktime” by having the upgrade features in the menus, yet crippled upon attempted use.

Still, this is one I can see myself using. And it was free, so how can I complain? Just kidding. We all know I can complain about anything. While an email backup app doesn’t have the inherent sex appeal of a good text editor (who doesn’t love text?), it’ll be good to have around.

So what do you guys think of Day 2? Ay or nay?

I wish they'd offer something that is really useful, like AppZapper.

Well i had to use AppZapper to remove Mailsteward, after it became chief suspect - my Mail.app stopped working correctly after using MailSteward Lite (not retreiving mail). Not that that solved anything so it is all a bit mysterious and i'm not looking foreward to a trip to the forums to solve this anomaly.. Any suggestions welcome ;)

I wouldn't have gone looking for an app like this but I downloaded (can't beat free) and I really like it. It will be integrated into my weekly routine.

MacAppaDay=free; free=good.

Free is nice, so long as it is useful. Time will tell on that front.

What's problematic is that I've completely halted all shareware software purchases in the hopes that the apps that I could use will become free giveaways on these newfangled sites.

Assuming there are others who share my frugal spending habits these sites could be seen as a potential negative for indie shareware developers.

This one, I got. TuneX I didn 't even bother downloading though; free crap is still crap.
