Apple released three pieces of software for Mac Pro firmware yesterday.
Firmware Restoration CD 1.1 is a disk image you can burn into a CD. In case something goes horribly wrong, this disc will get you back to an operating state. I highly recommend downloading this first (as does Apple).
Mac Pro SMC Firmware Update adjust your fan behavior (changing the version to 1.7f8). I’m a little unsure about this one. I installed it last night and I can’t detect a difference. I was a little afraid it would get louder. When it installs, the fans kick into high gear. Oh boy, now that is loud.
Mac Pro (mid 2006) EFI Firmware Update 1.0 fixes Boot Camp and startup issues. Your firmware will be version MP11.005C.B01 after.
According to some readers on xlr8yourmac, if you install Windows in Boot Camp after installing this update, SATA drives are in DMA mode, without slipstreaming drivers into a new disc. It’s not quite strong confirmation yet, but it’s looking good. After installing Windows four times, I’m not about to wipe out my working installation to test. Any of you care to?
