Lower your Visor on Leopard

Visor on LeopardCallooh! Callay! My prayers—not the ones for world peace, more’s the pity—have been answered. Now, I’m operating under the assumption that all of you have the exact same needs that I do, hence the discussion yesterday of the new WidescreenMailPlugin. Last night, I discovered another of my outstanding Leopard gaps has been filled: another of my favorite extensions, Visor, has returned to live in harmony with the spotted cat.

If you don’t know what Visor is then you, my friend, have been missing out on what is only one of the greatest inventions of the nascent 21st century. For those of us that find ourselves constantly taking a trip down Terminal lane, Visor simplifies the journey by offering a command line which rolls down over the top half of the screen. Visor was one of the first things I tried installing when I upgraded to Leopard, and woe was me when I discovered that it caused Terminal to crash on launch.

But that sad day was not to be the end of all hope. The clever folks over at Ars Technica’s Mac Ach forum figured out a way to make Visor run on 10.5. The trick? Use a copy of Tiger’s Terminal.app. User insertinanename provides a downloadable package which includes a hacked version of Tiger’s Terminal.app (so you don’t have to follow my instructions for hiding it from the Dock). Follow his instructions from the above forum posting, and a transparent roll-down command-line is yours for the taking.
