Intuit doth protest too much

Quicken Intuit’s going to need to invest some money into training its customer service representatives. Following the announcement of a new version of Quicken for Windows, Mac users calling to inquire about a Mac version were told that Quicken 2007 would be the last one. That wasn’t quite right.

According to Intuit spokesperson Jodi Reinman, Quicken for Mac development is still alive and well. We won’t be hearing about the new version for a while yet though. The release was delayed due to reasons outside of their control.

Intuit has moved its Quicken for Mac release schedule because of Mac OS X v10.5 “Leopard’s” forthcoming release, according to information from Intuit. Apple initially intended to release Leopard earlier this year but postponed its release until October in order to focus development efforts on the iPhone, which launched in late June.

Wait… what? How is the development of the next version of Quicken tied to Leopard? Actually, cancel that. Why is it? Let’s face it, financial software doesn’t need the latest and greatest APIs to be a compelling software package. They proved that by releasing Quicken 2007 as a PowerPC only application. Intuit really isn’t on the cutting edge. One of the big features of that version was a widget, which is Tiger only, but that makes one wonder about their priorities.

In related news, Intuit is developing an online version of Quicken. Someone please start the Quicken for Mac death countdown clock.

If the death of Quicken for Mac is near, hopefully this will open the door for Apple to unleash their Banking application which has long been rumored.

Maybe the delay is caused because they are finally going to bring to Quicken for Macintosh the feature set of the Windows version.

Would you trust your finances -- and your financial security -- to an online version of Quicken? Where anyone who can guess your password can run rampant through your accounts?

More importantly: would you trust the company that makes the bug-riddled, data-losing Quicken For Mac to keep your data safe and uncorrupted online?

Intuit died when they stopped updating QuickBooks for Mac years ago... I had bought a copy but returned it unopened as they announced dropping Mac that same week. They pretend to have come back tot he Mac... I won't come back to them.

Their Quicken product for Mac can be summed up in two words: "it sucks."

There are alternatives that frankly work better than Quicken does on the Mac.

People trust Intuit with their data as it is now. Millions of people.

TurboTax online is an example. Lot more personal info there than my bank account info. Just plain ol TurboTax efiling.

Sounds like a smoke screen.
