Grab iMovie HD ‘06 for “free”

iMovie '06iMovie ‘08: it’s new, it’s improved, it’s different from the ground up.

So I can understand why some people might loathe it. We must, after all, fear the different, you see—not embrace it. And certainly not think it.

If case the thought of switching to a brand new style of video editing makes you tremble, don’t worry too much: you can always go back to the warm safety blanket of your old version of iMovie, thanks to Apple.

Aware that some might be at odds with the new shininess of iMovie ‘08, Apple’s made its predecessor, iMovie HD ‘06, available as a free download—provided you are a registered iLife ‘08 user. That’s also good news for G4 owners, since iMovie ‘08 doesn’t support the older processor.

Of course, the alternative to this—crazy as it might sound—is not to buy iLife ‘08 at all. Yes, yes—poppycock! But I feel obliged to mention it, ludicrous as it is.

One thing I've noticed about how Steve presents is if it appears that he is attempting to "convince" you something is cool, there are problems. This is not only noted with the iMovie "re-write endorsement" but the (lack-of) an Apple support iPhone SDK @ WWDC. Apple sells itself, Steve is a great presenter and visionary, but frankly the tech sells itself -- whenever Steve goes over the top in endorsing a 'feature', I'm always skeptical. iMovie 08 looks nice, but it clearly was not on target with the iLife release timeline. Unfortunately this is amplified by the fact noone with a G4 can make a full suite upgrade... if Final Cut Studio 2 can run on a 1.25 Ghz G4 (according to Apple's system requirements), then why can't iMovie 08?

They probably didn't want to be blasted too hard for the high requirements of iMovie 08. It won't run on my last gen PowerBook. Needs at least a G5 with conditions for that. So many people like myself would probably complain (unlike myself) about not being able to use it even though they bought iLife 08. Apple keeping us happy.
