Get a GrandPerspective of your hard drive

GrandperspectiveLifehacker’s download of the day today is a Mac-exclusive, free application called GrandPerspective. And it does for your hard drive precisely what the title proclaims: it gives you a grand perspective of the space on your hard drive (see image above).

Simply point the app to any directory on your hard drive and it will generate an image much like the one above. The size of each colored block is proportional to the size of its corresponding file. A click of the button labeled “Reveal” will show the file in the Finder, ready for deletion at your any command. With hard drive space at a premium these days—especially in media-centered notebooks—GrandPerspective is a welcomed utility in my book.

A VERY good app. This software has saved my life numerous times, especially with space-sucking iTunes TV shows.

There are a few other hard drive treemap apps out there. Personally, I use Disk Inventory X: http://www.derlien.com/

In addition to the features you describe as present in GrandPerspective, it has a file browser like the Finder's list view and a visible legend of which colours match up to what file type. Both of these things help in finding specific items.
