Fun with RubyCocoa

Posted by Pat Nakajima | Thursday, June 07, 2007 2:00 PM PT

RubyCocoa LogoIf you’ve ever wanted to feel the glory of putting together your own Cocoa application, but didn’t have no knowledge of Objective-C (the programming language typically used in Cocoa apps), give RubyCocoa a try. It lets you build your application using Ruby, which is a bit more intuitive for a new learner.

Apparently the next version of OS X will have a good amount of new features for Ruby programmers. With the Ruby on Rails web framework built-in, it will become easy to develop web applications using the increasingly popular language.

Ruby’s growing popularity is a product of a philosophy best explained by Jesper, when he describes the growing popularity of languages that are easier for the programmer but harder for the machine:

Wanna bet which one of you and the machine has the most potential to quadruple in speed over five years? Wanna bet which one tires first of doing harder things?

The RubyCocoa website has all sorts of tutorials and lessons for anybody interested in getting started. Plus, it’s an open source project, so it’s free.

Pyobjc does the same thing for Python.
