One thing I actually find extremely useful in Firefox is the gesture extension. By holding down the right mouse button and moving the pointer in a particular pattern, you can invoke any of a number of functions. While I’m a big fan of keyboard shortcuts, sometimes I’m heavily using the mouse and keyboard hotkeys become terribly inconvenient.
I’ve always wanted to have gestures available in a global mechanism. Quicksilver has the Abracadabra plugin, but I’ve never had good luck getting it configured and working correctly. I kept looking but never found anything in the price range I was looking for (free). That was until today.
FlyGesture is now free!
It’s never really been a very good seller (good thing I didn’t go indie with it), and I think it’ll probably do more for me as a freebie. So hey, why not?
Gus Mueller of Flying Meat released his FlyGesture software as freeware today. Not only does it do exactly what I was hoping for, it’s extremely easy. It’s brain dead simple. Gus, you’ve just made a fan out of me.

Just so you know there is also a program called xGestures that is a great gesture program for the mac. I works for any and all apps on os x and has some cool features. I started with cocoagestures but it only worked on cocoa apps where xGestures is seamless and works out of a pref. pane. I does cost but is only $5 for a lifetime license which I don't find unreasonable and the dev. is great about responding and new feature requests. I have no ties to the dev. I just found it to be a great program for those who use gestures on the mac. As for those forced to use windows there is a program called StrokeIt that is free for non institutional users (namely regular folks) and works well enough for those forced to work on windows at work.
I installed FlyGesture yesterday on my 24" iMac and I absoloutely love it! It reminds me of the gestures in Black & White and makes OSX even more of a pleasure to use. It's programs like Quicksilver and FlyGesture that make me cringe when I go to work and am forced to use Windows.
