Flash 10 RC available for thrill-seekers

Posted by Scott McNulty | Tuesday, August 12, 2008 1:59 PM PT

Flash RC 10Flash is a word that strikes terror into the hearts of Mac users. This ubiquitous browser plugin is known more for its weaknesses (slow on Macs, annoying Flash advertisements) than for its strengths (cross-platform, rich feature set). I’m not sure that the Flash Player 10 RC (that’s Release Candidate for those of you that don’t speak software deveoplerese) will change any of that, but it does add a boatload of features, including:

  • New Text engine
  • GPU compositing and blitting (meaning it will use your Mac’s graphics CPU to render faster)
  • Limited Fullscreen Keyboard Access (is that anything like jumbo shrimp?)

Release Candidate status means that Adobe is pretty sure all show-stopping bugs have been squashed in this release, and it is good to go. That being said it isn’t the final version, so install at your own risk.

if they don't speed it up a lot on the Mac, I propose we rename it Slug.

Since I installed this Flash upgrade, my MacBook fans are not running at all near the RPM's at which they ran before the upgrade on webpages with Flash based video.

Before, the fans ran loudly. Now, the fans are rarely audible, if at all.
