Designing Men: OS X and Longhorn

Apple vs. MSJust because Windows XP can boot on Intel Macs doesn’t mean the time-honored tradition of comparing Apples with orangesPCs is going anywhere.

An article over at TechNewsWorld recounts a panel at the recent South by Southwest Interactive Expo about developing OS X and Longhorn. The guests were former Apple employee Cordell Ratzlaff and former Microsoft employee Mark Ligameri, both of whom now work at the well-known Frog Design firm. They discussed the similarities and differences between dealing with design at Apple and Microsoft. And while we have a love-to-hate relationship with with old Gates & Co., I do find myself buying the following:

“Ligameri explained that contrary to what many people believe, the Windows design team doesn’t copy many Apple ideas. Most of those ideas are simply good ideas, and designers often conceive of goods ideas at similar times, a point Ratzlaff acknowledged.”
Apple certainly doesn’t have a monopoly on good design, but, as the article mentions, they certainly do pay more attention to it than their Microsoft counterparts.
