Crazy Help menu coolness

Posted by Dan Moren | Friday, October 26, 2007 1:17 PM PT

helparrow.jpgSo here I was, trying to solve the issue of whether or not partitions are resizable in Disk Utility without losing data (Apple Support says “nuh uh”; Leopard help says “maybe”). So I open up the fancy new Help menu and type in “Resize.” And besides the Help Viewer results, up pops a hit for a menu item, aptly named “Resize.”

What surprised me, however, was that selecting that option summoned a giant blue floating arrow that gently hovered in the air, pointing to that menu option (yes, it actually moves). Which is possibly the most frightening thing I’ve seen in Leopard thus far. After all, it’s only a short step away from an inflatable hand sliding out of the optical drive and slapping you in the face.

But I’m sure it would be a very well designed inflatable hand.

But remember . . . OS8/9's help/tutorial used to highlight the menu entry with a red, semi translucent circle around the word in the menu. Apple's copying themselves!

Nice. I just found this by accident today (November 17) and checked here to see if it had been covered already. Guess it has. :-( I was looking for tab help in NetNewsWir.

Oh well. very cool indeed. I didn't realize OS 8/9 had this. Been a user since the end of 8.5.
