Sure, we know there’re plenty of things you can do with your Apple remote, everything from controlling QuickTime Player and Keynote to putting your Mac to sleep and choosing your OS at boot. But having a remote control, even one as seemingly simple as Apple’s, could be a help in plenty of apps, if only the technology was leveraged.
Developer Martin Kahr is out to do just that. His application, Remote Control (soon to be renamed “Sofa Control”), lets you use your Apple Remote to interface with a number of programs like popular media player VLC, and Microsoft PowerPoint. While Remote Control is still in development, it’s coming along quite well; I gave it a spin on my MacBook just last night. Martin’s even packaged the latest version with a “Guess a Number” game that can be played entirely by the remote.
When I can navigate my OS only by remote, then we’ll know OS X is on its way to being a killer media center.
