Chax: More Features for iChat

Posted by Scott Silverman | Friday, March 03, 2006 1:58 PM PT

chax.jpgAs elegant and easy as iChat is, I often find that it seems to be missing some crucial features and preferences. For example, it wasn't until Tiger came around that Apple finally added an auto-reply away message, a feature rival AIM has had forever. Even since Tiger was introduced, including the current version of iChat, I have had one major complaint: the chat windows always pop up in the same spot. They often pop up over each other, causing me to lose track (and often accidentally ignore) who I'm chatting with.

Meet Chax, a “collection of minor modifications and additions that make using Apple's iChat more enjoyable.” Couldn't be put better. Chax improves iChat's preferences by adding quite a few enhancements.

Some of my favorite added preferences are:

  • Animated user icons can be displayed

  • Show Address Book nickname instead of full name

  • Auto-accept incoming text chat messages

  • Save and restore window positions for screen names

  • Hide all chat windows when iChat is inactive

There are many more features as well. This is such a great little plug-in! If you really enjoy this piece of freeware, consider donating to Kent Sutherland, the wonderful man who wrote it!
