Camino 1.6 preview keeps better tabs on you

Camino Camino is, quite simply, one of the best web browsers for Mac OS X. It may not have every feature under the sun, but it’s fast and it has some of the very best features. The preview of Camino 1.6 shows that tradition continues.

The new version features work done as part of Google’s Summer of Code, namely the new scrollable tabs feature. The keyword is scrollable as you can actually use your scroll wheel to move through the entire tab listing. Safari doesn’t have an equivalent feature (but it does have drag and drop tabs, which Camino lacks).

It also has better AppleScript support and a software update capability. I can’t tell how complete the software update functionality is, but it verified I had the latest preview.

Opera has both scroll-wheel switchable tabs (hold the right mouse button down and scroll), as well as drag and drop tabs. Also, it's smaller and faster than Camino.

Yes, Camino is an excellent browser. And - unlike Mozilla's other offering, Firefox - it's fully native. This, of course, enables it to make use of the plenty of the nice system-wide functionality that is available throughout OS X via the frameworks.

However, it has got one dirty little secret. Run Console (in /Applications/Utilities) and look at the logs. You'll find:

Warning once: This application, or a library it uses, is using NSQuickDrawView, which has been deprecated. Apps should cease use of QuickDraw and move to Quartz.

It's using deprecated drawing technology.

In fact, in *several* respects the rendering is nowhere near as good as you get with Safari. For one thing, Mozilla hasn't got hypenation properly sorted out.

Nevertheless, it's good to have a copy of Camino on hand. It's a nice piece of software, and still has marginally better JavaScript support than Safari. For example, Gmail's chat software in the web interface doesn't work with Safari 3.
