Every web browser has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. It’s one of the reasons I endlessly bounce between browsers constantly. One day Safari seems right, the next Camino is the bomb, then Firefox and its fancy new address bar pulls me in, then finally I revisit OmniWeb once again.
What further complicates matters is that some browsers definitely handle some websites far better than others. As much as I love WebKit based browsers, some Javascript utterly cripples them and their performance. Firefox and its Gecko ilk can offer superior performance. I can’t count the number of times I’ve changed my default browser only to regret that choice later.
In steps Choosy, which has an interesting solution. When you click a link, Choosy helps decide which browser to open that link with. You set up a list of browsers and the behavior when a link is clicked. There are a variety of options, but the compelling one to me is the palette option which lets you choose the browser to use on the fly. No more cringing as a browser that wasn’t running already opens, or opening a WebKit unfriendly site in Safari.
As with other new software, Choosy will be free during its beta phase, but shareware upon release (with a beta user discount natch).
I use to have this same problem very recently. I've settled on Firefox with a few good extensions and the GrApple Yummy theme. For me, I've found overall that Firefox is more stable and never crashes on my Mac. I know for some people it's the opposite.
Adblock Plus and few tweaks to Firefox's default settings has made it lightning fast. It also uses less memory than Safari and even releases memory, something I wish Safari did.
When I would use Firefox I would miss the elegant look of Safari as I did not like the default theme of Firefox very much. GrApple Yummy for Firefox fixed that problem. Camifox is also a nice Mac theme but I'll take a look at Choosy and see how I like it.
