It might have been overshadowed by the announcement of a 2GB iPod shuffle and corresponding price drop on the 1GB shuffle, but I’m sure we’ve got some Xsan fanboys in the house, what?
For those three of you who are intimately involved with Apple’s solution for distributed storage, you have much to rejoice about this Tuesday morning. Meet Xsan 2, Apple’s latest iteration of its program for working with massive terabytes of data over storage area networks (SANs). Xsan 2 has a retooled Admin interface, the ability host volumes on separate Xsan servers, Spotlight integration, and more. And, for the first time, Xsan has been qualified to work with third-party RAID servers in addition to the Xserve RAID (which now appears to have vanished from the Apple Store), though it appears to be limited to a specific solution from Promise Technology.
Of course, it goes without saying that Xsan 2 is fully compatible with Leopard and Leopard Server, so if you’re looking to do some serious data modeling, Xsan 2 could be your very best friend. If you’re the kind of person who makes friends with storage area networks, anyway. The price points hasn’t budged at $999/node and it’s available immediately.
Sigh. Someday I too will have a need for creating 2 petabyte disk volumes. Someday.
