I use Application Enhancer, or APE, for two useful tools, FruitMenu and ClearDock. Not everyone is a big fan like I am. Indeed, many troubleshooting mavens will practically call it the devil (and on the other hand, I hold no ill will and also help troubleshoot often). Apple will even ignore your problems if you use it without even doing cursory investigation into whether it really is related. Super.
A bug in OS X (Rosetta in particular) caused PowerPC applications to crash. The only solution to the problem was to restart or use the update_prebinding command. I’ve run into this a couple times (Office getting hit the most often). In order to deal with the issue (because Apple was slow on the draw fixing it), Unsanity forced the command to be run. That had its own terrible side effects, namely chewing up memory.
Another tidbit we can add to the 10.4.9 pile is that this is fixed and as a result, the latest version of APE actually stops running the command because the issue is gone.

MacUser is your source for news, info, and opinion about Apple, the Mac, and the iPod. Our dedicated team of bloggers covers everything that is relevant to Mac users — and, okay, some stuff that’s not quite relevant, but is still a lot of fun.
I have no idea what any of that means, but it sounds great! :)
