An app that’s just my cup of tea

Cuppa-1

A lot of people like tea (myself not included). But tea is only really good if it brews for the exact right time. That’s why Natnanatos Software made Cuppa, a little app that tells you how long you should brew your tea. The program runs directly from the Dock, so all you have to do is control-click its Dock icon, click on a beverage listed, and wait for a notification telling you that your tea has brewed long enough. You can also change the notification settings and add and delete beverages to have Cuppa reflect your tea preference. Also, Cuppa comes in a Universal Binary, so even Intel Mac-using tea drinkers can enjoy it. Of course, according to Leander Kahney, this program is only for us silly Americans:

This software is for clueless Americans, who can’t brew tea to save their lives. Americans never heat the water hot enough to properly steep the brew. (Quick tip: if you want a decent cup of tea in America, head for the nearest Chinese bakery. It’s the only place that actually boils the water).

Ouch.

I'm a bit of a tea fanatic myself (never quite developed a taste for coffee) and it's true that it's hard to find really good tea, though I take more issue with the variety of tea than the hot water preparation. You can have boiling water to make Lipton's but it's still Lipton's. Douglas Adams has a great essay about making the perfect cup of tea, and why Americans usually fail.

They should make a widget. Or someone should.
