Adium and Facebook sitting in a tree

Posted by Aayush Arya | Monday, May 12, 2008 10:00 AM PT

Facebook Chat on AdiumIn what is sure to serve as yet another step towards Facebook’s imminent domination of all aspects of our lives, the next version of Adium will include support for Facebook Chat right out of the box (not that they’re going to start shipping it in boxes though).

Evan Schoenberg, an Adium developer, posted a quickie on the official blog letting us know that the new protocol has already made its way onto the gargantuan list of Adium’s supported networks; the damning evidence was shown in the screenshot above.

There’s no word yet on when the team plans to make this version available for download, but for all the Facebook fans among our readership (assuming it’s not the entire readership), we sure hope its soon.

I for one won't be using it. It's bad enough that people can see when I'm online with Facebook, I don't want them to think I'm signed in ALL THE TIME.

how about video/audio chat or better file transfer first before they develop stupid pointless add-ons like this?

@Jonathan: voice/video work is ongoing; you should consider filing a bug report on whatever file transfer problem you're having as it works great for many people.

Your contributions are welcome if you'd like to improve Adium, your friendly local open source project :)

I just downloaded the new beta of Adium and it works fine. Facebook chat works great there but it keeps logging me out of Facebook (on Firefox 3 RC2 and Safari 3.1.1, I haven't tried more browsers). Anyone's having the same problem?

Thanks in advance!
