We’re breaking radio silence on Messrs. Maynor and Ellch to bring you this news from the Black Hat security conference. Last year at the conference, the duo showed what they claimed was a bug that would allow them to take over a stock Mac via its wireless driver. A firestorm erupted, as no concrete evidence was ever demonstrated by Maynor and Ellch, and Apple itself denied that there was any vulnerability.
At this year’s Black Hat, the Wi-Fi hack has been given special acknowledgment in the first annual Pwnie awards. Maynor and Ellch’s “exploit” received the coveted “Most overhyped bug” award by the panel of judges, including security researchers like Dave Aitel, Dino Dai Zovi, and HD Moore. The judges had this to say:
In the end, the only public information about Maynor’s Wi-Fi vulnerabilities are hype, denial, a media frenzy, and a patch that may or may not have been based on Maynor’s findings. And now we as a nation can seek closure for the long year of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. May the Wi-Fi Hack saga finally be at an end.
David Maynor was the sole recipient of this award. Jon was not included.
