WWDC ‘07: Secure your valuables

Leopard Security Apple’s redesigned site features a lot more Leopard information, including a lot about its security. A lot of the text describes features that already exist in OS X and that we’re familiar with. However, there are a couple new feature sections.

Safe to share. You can now allow access to services in your computer to users other than those local to your system. You can add users from your Address Book, or if you’re in a corporate LAN, users from your corporate directory. That’s a neat trick and will help when I need to share files with someone temporarily without giving them access to other resources.

Sandbox tested. While light on technical details, specific processes in Leopard, like the network time daemon and Spotlight indexer, are “sandboxed”. That is to say they are restricted from accessing other resources. It’d be great to know how this works and more importantly how effective it will be in heading off threats. Only time will tell.
